Ardclach Visitor Guide Information
Ardclach, lies south of Nairn in lands watered by the river Findhorn and is seen to its best advantage near Ardclach Bell Tower.
This curious 17th-century structure was built because the parish church was too well hidden from view for lookouts there to be able to give warning of raiding clans.
The tower is on a high ridge overlooking the river, and thus served as a watchtower for the people of the district.
The church itself has been rebuilt several times since the original was erected before the 17th century. Scotland's first missionary to India, Donald Mitchell, was born in Ardclach in 1782.
