Handa Island, This island is near to Scourie on the north-west coast of Sutherland. It stands proudly with 400 ft high sandstone cliffs and was once populated by an island 'queen' and seven families, living in glorious isolation. After the potato famine in 1845 the island was deserted and it is now a bird sanctuary.

Separated from the parent island by onlv a few vards is the Stack of Ilanda, standing on three pillars, a remarkable piece of sea sculpture. Access to Handa Island is by boat hire from Scourie. |
