Fortrose, This ancient Black Isle town was once the cathedral town of Ross shire and a noted seat of learning in medieval times. The cathedral was completed in the late I5th century and built of red sandstone, which lends a degree of charm and beauty to the now ruined structure. Close by Fortrose is Chanonry Point and its lighthouse, where a stone marks the spot where Coinneach Odhar the Brahan seer, was executed. He was a rather misty character in Highland history, given credit for many prophecies that have since come true, such as the building of the Caledonian canal.

He prophesied the downfall of a number of great Highland chiefs in circumstances that were fulfilled down to small details. He died because his noble lady employer asked him to tell her what her husband was doing in France. What the seer saw was not to her liking and she had him burned in a tar barrel. |
