Dunbeath, small fishing village on the north-east coast with a small harbour. Dunbeath Castle, I430, is a magnificent edifice, made more prominent by its position on a high cliff overlooking the small river and beach. At one time it was a stronghold of the Sutherlands. They lost favour with King James IV, who gave it to the Innes family. It then descended through the female line to a branch of the Sinclair Earl s of Caithness.
