Drumnadrochit Images |
Drumnadrochit, This village is a collection of farm townships living in communal rural harmony.
A mile or so on the road south of the village is Urquhart Castle, now ruined but still impressive enough to fire the imagination. A 13th-century fortification built on the site of an Iron Age fort, it was occupied by English forces in I296 and finally captured by the Scots in I 308. The castle was then in use until 1689 when it was blown up and left in ruins after the Jacobite Rising. The Roth century tower is in good condition and the whole environs are a pleasant and interesting walk back into the past. |
